Mac Tricks 1: Paste content with appropriate formatting
Have you ever copied text from a web page and pasted it into an email or Word document? Then you will know the problem that you also automatically copy the formatting and usually, the font and font size no longer fit.
To prevent this, you can also paste the text with the key combination ALT + Shift + Apple + V. Alternatively, you can also find the command under Edit > "Paste and match formatting" or "Paste and match style".
In some programs such as Chrome, the key combination is Shift + Apple + V.
Mac Tricks 2. Insert special characters
If you want to use special characters in a document, you can - just like on an iPhone - press and hold the corresponding letter key until a pop-up with the special letters to choose from appears.
You can then select the desired letter either with the mouse or with the gray number below.
Mac Tricks 3. View definitions
You can see the definition of a word by hovering over it and then pressing CTRL + Apple + D.
The corresponding Wikipedia article is also displayed.
Mac Tricks 4. Delete Files Quickly
Not only can files be deleted by dragging them to the Trash or right-clicking and selecting "Move to Trash", but you can also simply delete them with the Apple + Backspace key combination (top right) when they are highlighted.
Mac Tricks 5. Date & Day of the Week in Menu Bar
To show the date and day of the week in the menu bar, open System Preferences > Date & Time and tick the "Show date" and "Show day of the week" boxes. So you always have today's date in view.
Mac Tricks 6. Start Mac silently
You're in a meeting, a lecture or at home, your partner is already asleep and you want to (re)start your Mac? Then you will probably involuntarily draw attention to yourself with the notorious start sound. To prevent this, you can simply hold down the Mute button while starting up your Mac.
Mac Tricks 7. Change Volume Silently
You can also suppress the sound that occurs when you adjust the volume. To do this, simply press Shift + Volume+ or Shift + Volume- .
Mac Tricks 8. Create Signatures with Preview
With the Preview app, you can create your own signature that you can use for your digital documents. This puts an end to tiresome printing, signing, and scanning or faxing again.
To do this, open the PDF document that you want to sign and select "Show toolbar " or click on the right pen. In the toolbar that opens below, you can now select the option " Create signature from FaceTime HD camera... " under the "Sig" button. Sign on a piece of white paper and hold it in front of your camera while the previewer takes a photo of it and saves it as your signature. You can now use this signature for every document.
Mac Tricks 9. Delete characters to the right of the cursor
Especially users who switch from PC to Mac will miss the delete key, which can be used to delete characters to the right of the cursor. Of course, you can also do this on the Mac by pressing fn + backspace.
Mac Tricks 10. Print faster
You don't need to open the corresponding document every time you want to print something. Under System Preferences > Printers & Scanners you simply drag your installed printer to your desktop - or even more conveniently to your dock bar. Now you can simply slide any document that you want to print onto the printer symbol and printing will start immediately. This saves you waiting until the program is open and you have started the printing process.
