Whether it's Need for Speed, Gran Turismo, or Forza - in 2020 there wasn't much in terms of racing games on the market that had any reputation. In 2021 we will really step on the gas again. Five big racing games line up at the front to be published.
Need for Speed 2021 – Arcade Area
Probably the most popular racing games series in the world has not brought so many really good games to light in recent years.
Need for Speed Heat in 2019 was even the nail in the coffin for an entire development studio! Ghost Games has been relieved of the task of developing new Need For Speed games.
The studio was even renamed EA Gothenburg and should only deal with the further development of the Frostbyte engine and support other teams. Ouch.
Criterion Games is taking over the 2021 spin-off of the series and likely years to come as well. Let's just hope we don't get another Need for Speed: Burnout hybrid like we did with NFS: Rivals in 2013.
Need for Speed definitely needs a good offshoot again. That should be clear to everyone since NFS: Payback at the latest.
By the way, the video that we displayed above shows the alpha gameplay of Criterion's new Need for Speed game.
Forza Horizon 5 – Arcade Area
The Horizon Festival is a huge music event held regularly in the world of Forza.
Most recently it took place in Great Britain and, like in 2020, has not been seen again.
According to rumors, the fifth part of the extremely popular Forza offshoot will be released in spring 2021 and thus before Forza Motorsport 8.
So all fans of the series don't have to wait much longer and will soon get two games of a good racing game.
Horizon moves a bit more into the arcade area of racing games. The range of vehicles and setting options is still amazing.
The best example to explain the difference between Horizon and motorsport is the Hot Wheels DLC from Forza Horizon 3.
There you could drive your bodies through loops, boosters, and over jumps on an oversized Hot Wheels track.
This is exactly the kind of gameplay we hope to see in Forza Horizon 5.
Gran Turismo 7 - Simulation
The Gran Turismo Racing Games series is now a proud 22 years of history and it doesn't look like it's going to end any time soon.
If you are looking for a real racing simulation, then Gran Turismo is your game.
The subtitle of the Gran Turismo series is not for nothing "The Real Driving Simulator". So it's sort of like the flight simulator for cars.
The big highlight of Gran Turismo is the garage, which you can build up with hundreds of cars.
For the collector's urge in you, a Gran Turismo game is probably just the right thing. It is also much more cost-effective than buying a garage with real cars.
Gran Turismo 7 will be exclusive to the PS5. So players with a console of the old generation look in the tube.
In fact, however, it is a good decision by the developer to make the leap to the new generation of consoles immediately. This is not only extremely good for the graphics of the game, but also does not unnecessarily prolong the change from one generation to the next.
With Cyberpunk 2077, we've all seen what can happen if a developer really wants to play on the old consoles.
Forza Motorsport 8 - Simulation
We've gleaned from every possible source that Forza Motorsport 8, or just Forza 8, will be exclusive to the Xbox Series X.
However, we assume that this will also mean the Series S. Whether the game will run on PC is not yet known.
However, we are confident that Microsoft will not unnecessarily split up its ecosystem and that Forza 8 will also be released for Windows.
According to a leak, Forza 8 will get a reimagining of the series and a proper story mode à la Need for Speed.
Turn 10, the developer of the Forza games, claims to focus on quality over quantity. Other leaks state that Forza 8 is making a return to the series' SIM roots.
So you'll have a much more realistic experience than arcade racing games like Need For Speed or the Forza Horizon series.
The subject of graphics is particularly important in racing games. Forza 8 will run on Xbox Series X at 4K at 120 FPS with ray tracing enabled.
So, just like with Gran Turismo 7, keeping the old generation of consoles in the rear-view mirror is a good decision.
